If you do choose to watch Parks and Rec with your kids, please have a serious talk with your kids about the Tammys. While ultimately he does continuously brush off and reject these women with the support of his friends, I feel that this is an aspect of the show that really falls short of providing young people with positive ideas about how to handle situations like this. It is played for laughs, he does not seek professional counseling, and he still has occasional contact with the women that abused him. One particular character, a male, is a survivor of psychological, physical, and sexual abuse. There is one very important caveat I need to point out though. It's on the same level as most network prime time comedies- sex, drugs, and sensitive current events are on the table, but of course it's network TV so it's nothing like an R-rated Judd Apatow movie or an HBO show. The show really hammers home ideas of community, diversity, friendship, and ethics as fundamental American values, but does so while being way too cool to come off like an after-school special.īut the humor is definitely not for kids. Eventually, every major arc ends with the good, honest, hardworking people coming together and solving the problem and saving the town, even if there's always self-interested people running around in the works. Parks and Rec just might be the most hopeful, optimistic, and wholesomely patriotic show on television. While NBCU has lined up a slew of library series titles for the new streaming service, only The Office and Parks & Recreation will be exclusive. So it's just nihilism all around, right? Complete opposite. But much like her (far more cynical) NBC counterpart Liz Lemon, sometimes liberal Leslie reaches the end of an episode to find that she herself has become the bad guy. Expect it to go as most NBC shows go- no point of view is safe from ridicule, but there are a lot more sympathetic liberal characters and a lot more conservative villains and buffoons. The main protagonist is a small-town Democrat, her boss is a Libertarian, and there are real-life politicians who make cameos from both sides of the (pre-2016) isle. Basically the show treats small-town government politics as a microcosm for American government in general. The show follows a group of city employees in a fictional small town in southern Indiana. Because it has some extremely important lessons that young people are definitely not getting from most media out there. Parks and Rec has to be one of the hardest shows to give a numerical age-appropriateness rating to.
